Beloved wife, mother and sister, Vergie Magdalene Jackson Pittman, 90, of Shiloh, died June 6th, 2013 at Hospice House, Forest City.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Ben Howard Jackson and Carol Wilson Jackson. Mrs. Pittman was preceded in death by her older brother, Everette Jackson, younger sister Margie Jackson Wells, and youngest sister Shirley Jackson Walker.
Vergie graduated from R.S. Central High School in 1940 and went to work at the Stonecutter Mills in Spindale. In 1959, she married Frazier Pittman, of Spruce Pine, and moved to Baltimore, where he was employed by Bethlehem Steel Corporation. She worked as a school secretary until retiring from the Baltimore County School System in 1980. After retirement, the Pittmans returned to Rutherford County to live, where she earned her Associates Degree from Isothermal Community College. Vergie was fascinated by history and loved to write, and she authored many articles, poems and short stories. She also enjoyed and spent many hours researching her family tree. Vergie was a 30+ year member of Long Branch Road Baptist Church in Shiloh, and a devoted wife, mother, daughter, and sibling.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Frazier Pittman; three sons, Frazier Reuben Pittman of Baltimore, MD; John Charles Pittman and his wife Donna, of Brogue, PA; and Harold Everette Pittman and his wife Rebecca Feaster, of Des Moines, IA. She is also survived by a sister, Frances Jackson Robbins, of Forest City, and seven grandchildren - Marquel Pittman McKenzie and her husband Greg of Baltimore; Tara Pittman Diaman and her husband Dave of Baltimore; Nicole Pittman Herberlig and her husband Bob of Lewisberry, PA; Jodi Pittman Neuman and her husband Aaron of Brogue, PA; Danny Pittman of Alrington, TX; Scott Pittman of Fort Meade, MD; and Evan Pittman of Des Moines, IA. There are also seven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A Visitation will be held from 1:30pm until 3:15 pm Saturday at Long Branch Road Baptist Church, followed by a Funeral Service at 3:30 pm. Rev. Jerry Ruppe and Rev. John Perry will officiate. Burial will follow in the Southern Baptist Church Cemetery.
After the burial, a gathering of family and friends will be held at Long Branch Road Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
