Mr. Leonard Vernon "Cantaloupe" Propes, 89, of Golden Valley, died Monday, November 13, 2017 at his residence.
Leonard was born in Golden Valley on March 31, 1928. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eva Propes Huskins and his stepfather James Banner Huskins. He was a dedicated member of Golden Valley United Methodist Church, and was retired from NC DOT after 33 years of service and loved to travel. As an avid sports fan, Leonard loved the Tarheels, the Dodgers and church league softball.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ethel Houser Propes; his 2 daughters, Karyn Oliver and husband Tim, of Polkville, and Janice Scoggins and husband Andrew, of Golden Valley; his son, Jeff Propes, of the home; his 3 grandchildren, Gilbert Queen and wife Lynthia of Casar, Eric Queen, and Melissa Scoggins Todd and husband Brandon, all of Golden Valley; there are 8 great grandchildren, Destiny, Kirsten, and Isaiah, all of Casar, and Violett, Blakely, Brantley, Brayden, and Keenan, all of Golden Valley.
The Funeral will be conducted at 2:00 pm Thursday, November 16, 2017 at Golden Valley United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kevin Towery will officiate. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers are Gilbert Queen Jr., Chester Flynn, Teddy Houser, Eric Queen, Steve Wyont, and Keenan Todd; honorary pallbearers are James Brandle, Paul Morgan, Rodger Brackett, Olin Freeman, and Jim Eden.
The Visitation will be from 5 pm until 7 pm Wednesday at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral and Cremation Service.
