Potter and artist John King‘s legacy will carry on in the people he loved, taught and inspired. John passed away on December 18 at the age of 76 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Though an artist from a young age, John completed his BFA in ceramics at Western Carolina University and this began a lifetime passion in clay work. John shared this passion of artistry for 25 years as pottery instructor at Isothermal Community College and Good Earth Pottery Studio, and was the catalyst for countless others learning the craft.
John was strong willed and stubborn at times, but he always possessed a big heart and a quirky sense of humor. He was clever and full to the brim with knowledge gained through diverse life experiences as a ship’s cook, builder, painter, potter, parent, realtor, reader, gardener, and family man.
John is survived by his loving wife and partner of 50 years, Donna Wells King. He is also survived by his children Grant King and Kiowa Cilone with her husband, John; siblings Stuart King, Virginia King Ellis and Beverly Rhodes, as well as his four grandchildren.
Not unlike his intricate and entertaining carvings in clay, his legacy is etched into the minds of loved ones who will continue to honor him by living their lives to the fullest. The funeral will be a private ceremony with only close family and friends present.
