James Larry Powell, 77

Larry Powell, 77, of Mooresboro, entered Heaven Sunday, February 2, 2025.

Larry was born on April 16, 1947, to Horace and Jeanette Robbs Powell and grew up in Golden Valley. Upon graduating high school in 1965, Larry was drafted in the Army and served with distinction during the Vietnam War. Shortly after finishing his service, he began his career at Duke Power in Cliffside where he retired in 2002.

Although Larry knew a lot of people, those most important to him was his son, Jamie, and his very large family. Larry was the 7th of 12 brothers and sisters. One of his greatest joys was the annual Powell family reunion. It was there he could enjoy seeing so many of his loved ones all together. After retiring from Duke, Larry found a new passion for raising exotic birds. That passion then extended to goats, rabbits, chickens, guinea birds, and anything else Larry could put on his farm. Until it was a little too difficult, every evening you would find Larry out back ‘feeding up’. And that’s where you would sometimes find him, sitting on his bucket, just watching them.

Above all else, Larry knew and loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and his family finds peace in knowing that is Larry’s eternal home. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his brothers, Warren, Perry, Donald, Johnny, Jerry, and Michael Powell and his sisters, Madge McCurry, Thelma Harris, and June Edwards.

He is survived by his son, Jamie Powell and his wife Lisa, of Mooresboro; his sisters, Debbie Moose (Bill) of Statesville, Rhonda Beheler of Forest City, 2 step grandchildren, Hayden McKinney (Taylor) and Max McKinney, and his great grandson, Oliver McKinney and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves behind his devoted and loyal dogs, Jake, Brownie, and Lightning.

The Funeral will be conducted at 1:30 pm Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at Florence Baptist Church. The Rev. Daniel Selman and Rev. Curtis McDaniel will officiate. Burial will follow in the Cleveland Memorial Park with Military Rites accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. Pallbearers are Dale McCurry, Todd McCurry, Aiden Moose, Jeremy Powell, Wayne Reavis, and Max McKinney.

The Visitation will be from 11:30 am until 1:15 pm Wednesday at the Florence Baptist Church sanctuary.
