Hugh Henson, 80

James Hugh Henson, 80, of Sunshine, died Monday, April 10, 2023.

He was the son of the late Ralph and Beatrice Hammett Henson. Hugh graduated in 1963 with an Associate in Arts from Wingate College, and received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Applachian Teachers College in 1965. He then served in the US Army and Army Reserves from 1966 to 1994. He taught for several years in the Rutherford County Schools and coached girls basketball. He was a substitute teacher for Rutherford County Schools for over 20 years and helped his son Brandon Henson, coach middle school basketball. Hugh was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher.

He is survived by his wife, Susie Murray Henson; his son, Brandon Henson  of the Chase Community; his stepson, Tracy Short and his wife Donna, of Bostic; his sister, Marie Bowyer and her husband Wayne of Gaffney, SC; there are three grandchildren, Baylee Short, Marcus Short and Dylan Henson.

The Funeral will be conducted at 2:00 pm Thursday, April 13, 2023 at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church. The Rev. Steven Cooper will officiate. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Rites rendered by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. Active Pallbearers are Jasper Yelton, Wayne Bowyer, Marcus Short, Tommy Chapman, Jeffrey Chapman, and Danny Murray. Honorary Pallbearers are Baylee Short, Michael Long, Morgan Polly, and Glenn Murray.

The Visitation will be from 5 pm until 7 pm  Wednesday at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home.
