Mr. Howard Alexander Gettys, 87, of Hollis, died Friday, January 27, 2017 at Hospice House, Forest City.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Zeno Jefferson Gettys and Vera Whisnant Gettys. He was also preceded in death by his first wife of 52 years, Joan McFarland Gettys; and two brothers, Henry and Kenneth Gettys. He was a member of Big Springs Baptist Church, an Army veteran of the Korean War, and retired from Overnite Trucking Company in Gaffney.
He is survived by his wife, Mona Beheler; a son, Charles Gettys and wife Judy, of Hollis; a daughter, Sarah Gettys Clark and husband Greg, of Hollis; his sister, Frances Bailey and husband Palmer, of Ellenboro; and 2 brothers, Emmett Gettys and wife Louise, of Hollis, and Jefferson Gettys of Ellenboro; there are 2 grandchildren, Alexander Clark, and Frances Watkins and husband Virgil; and a great grandchild, Bailey Watkins; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The Funeral will be conducted at 2:00 pm Monday, January 30, 2017 at Big Springs Baptist Church. The Rev. Paul Scott, Rev. Joe Edwards, and Dr. Jim Richardson will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Rites accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. Pallbearers are Mike Gettys, George Gettys, Calvin Gettys, Ron Houser, Scott Bailey, Ronnie Bailey and Kirk McFarland.
The Visitation will be from 3 pm until 5 pm Sunday at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral and Cremation Service, and at other times the family with gather at the residence of Charles and Judy Gettys, at 283 Hinton Creek Road, Ellenboro.
