Mr. Clarence Edgar Richard, 93, of Bostic, died Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Hospice House, Forest City.
He was the widower of Lois Fortenberry Richard, who died in 1981, and son of the late Wesley and Susie White Richard. Clarence served in WW II in Company A 2nd Infantry 5th Division of the Army. His service included battles in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Ardennes. Clarence earned the Eamet Campaign Medal with 4 bronze service stars and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a POW for 3 months in Germany. Upon his return to the United States and to civilian life, he made a living as a farmer and painter.
He is survived by three daughters, Ruth Dobbins of Bostic, Mary Flynn and her husband Ed of Louisville, KY, and Wanda Whisnant and her husband Scott of Garner, NC; four sons, Tommy Richard and his friend Cynthia Grayson, Howard "Joe" Richard and his friend Christine Yount, and Roger "Bo" Richard and his wife Wanda, all of Ellenboro, and Robert Richards and his wife Carrell, of Waxhaw,NC; his sister, Lillie Wray of Valdese; there are 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
The Funeral will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at New Home United Methodist Church in Casar. Rev. David Miner and Dr. Robert Toney are to officiate. The body will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The Visitation will be from 6 PM until 8 PM Monday at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home.
